Only thing I can tell you about Fort Hood is that I was there with the Hell On Wheels guy's. I left in 1982, decided to get out of the army and try something else. You do have the Alamo not to far below you. Don't know how close you can get to it or if you can do any medal detecting around it. But that was one place I always wanted to go and never did. I did see a lot of old house's down that way and I think there is a couple of old parks close by. Look around Coppers Cove, just below Fort Hood. Use to be some old places in that town....if it's still there. Good Luck and Keep on Diggen. Southernbandit

Hello, Since 9-11 the access has been greatly curtailed to US military bases. Few people are let in and must have good reason. Doubt that any foriegn national would be let in unless escorted by a field grade officer. In the Fort Hood area (outside the base) there are a number of small caches that were hidden by the troops prior to deployment in World War II. (poker winnings and black market caches) Check the blocks outside the gates for merchant caches from the clip joints. I'm sure the locals can point out the red-light district to you. The places where the troops families stayed outside base will have lots of medals and coins from the children playing. Good Luck, SS

I understand about being escorted. One question though. Any ideas for out in the training area to the west of the main camp?

Howdy, I have been to Fort Hood once in 1974 for a club meeting. I am not familiar with the training area. I am guessing that the post is fenced and that you must go through the gate to get to that area. Maybe a local would know different. Good Luck, SS

You must be an Army guy Recce:) I've heard that all the gold at Fort Hood Texas is in the drill sergeant's mouth. If they give you any chaos, knock their teeth out and you've got treasure(LOL)!

Hay! You'll Do you know that you're talking about a Federal Military Reservation? Just let the MPs catch you with a Metal Detector on the "Post" (Ft.Hood)and see what happens! As far as detecting around THE Alamo :!: Don't even consider that ONE! I know for a fact... That , The Texas Rangers, take you out back and :? SHOOT you! A "PS" to that, "The Alamo" is right in the middle of downtown San Antonio, pop. 1.5 million, Mad Texans  !

Yep, the idea of detecting around the Alamo is akin to looking for Pee Wee's bike in the basement of the Alamo. Given the amount of street, big buildings and concrete, well....
I know one thing you can always find around the Alamo, panhandlers looking for handouts. When they catch a compassionate person there, a line forms. Interesting pecking order.

i agree with cptbill, watch your back when metal detecting on a military installation. In fact, play it safe and don't do it at all (as tempting as the thought of gold digging is). Never mind, do what you have to do to GET GOLD! (LOL)
