The notorious pirate Captain Kidd, used Mona as a temporary hideout, supposedly stashing booty, possibly 60,000 pounds sterling silver on Mona before sailing to the U.S.(and his hanging in 1701). Pirate Roberto Cofresi is main hunting grounds were the Mona Passage and his hideout being a cave on Mona Island.

Thanks Guys for the information provided.

In July 2000 (before 9-11) I went to Mona Island for 5 days.I set my tent in Sardinera beach. I met with one of the Biologist on duty, he told me there is a Cave on the west side of the island which a "Fat Guy" tried to get permission to treasure hunting inside the cave because in that cave an Archaeolgist found two skull many years ago, but the permission was rejected.

The next day I went to the cave to take a video footage, not to metal detecting, only video.I didn't see nothig but rocks, old bottle and old wood stick. Three month later I watch the video again I noted inside the cave, right in one of many walls there is a carved signal with the number "12"(carved not graffiti). Will be a treasure signal?Huh   Shocked Shocked

Amona if you still have the video try to post a picture in Treasure Marks/Signs Wink. Number 12 "12 paces?". I live in Florida but I was born in Bayamon,PR. My brother has a SEAFOX 24' in Lajas and we are planning to go to Palominito for some diving and maybe a camping trip to Mona by the end of this year.

The  author  Richard Winer mentions Mona Island in 2 of his books,
The Devil's Triangle and The Devils Triangle 2.
They were printed in the 1970's.
Offhand i remember he mentioned that during the '1950's or 1960's he found a small stash of coins while searching the caves on Mona.He said that it wasn't enough to pay for his trip though.
There could possibly be many more stashes as many pirates seem to have used the island.
