Zircon 5.5 Pointer Modification Update

April 03, 2000 at 13:48:12

Not to long back Don Cofer and I posted on several forums about the modification of the Zircon 5.5 Stud Finder. My unit modified--I posted strength of 3" on a quarter and about 2" on a dime, that is correct. Several people have made the modifications and have found the same results. The Zircon 5.5 sells for $25 to $40 dollars in range and that is what I been reported depending on where you buy one. However several people have contacted me and told me units they have bought only are 2" on a quarter and a bit less on a dime; I told them to count their blessings. Several have taken their units back to the stores and swapped for stronger units as they did tests on the units before modifing. My wifes unit is 2" on a quarter and a bit less on a dime. These are not $500 dollar items that have numerous quality checks done to them and the strengths will vary with the units.

However I did state count your blessing if your is weaker. I prefer to use my wife’s weaker unit because when digging targets 4 to 9" down and you stick the coil/probe into the hole--a unit that is 3" on a quarter is to strong. The coil is omni-directional and 3" from where??? is the target...however the with the wifes that is 2" on a quarter...direction of the target is much easier to find. With a unit that is 1/2" to 3/4" on a target and you try to find a coin in a plug it sometimes is difficult and you have to part the plug to find the target. With the Zircon 5.5 that is 2" on a quarter the coin can be found with no problems in the plug. With the 5.5 that is 2" on a quater sub-surface coins can be removed with a screwdriver easily...but that is true with the units that come out being 3" on a quarter.

Whatever...I have not found a pointer that can come close to strength the Zircon 5.5 and I have not found a pointer that can come close to the price. I have used mine now for about 8 months, almost daily, and I have changed the one 9 volt battery once. It is not power hungry at all.

Hope this clears up a few questions. Frank Hamill
