As for your second question, I prefer an ID on my machines. Not that the ID prevents me from digging something completely unknown - that happens all the time, but it helps me to decide whether or not to dig, especially when I'm really tired and can then decide whether or not I really want to dig up my 50th zinc penny of the day. I don't think I'd like to live without depth indication either. Both are nice features. Now, when I'm in the water, it's an entirely different story. Even though my current water machine does have tone ID, I still dig everything that comes in above iron, and sometimes I even dig iron tones. The water holds so many more possibilities that I just never pass up signals there. That pulltab tone in the water is MUCH more likely to be a gold ring than is the same tone on land.
