Try this tool. I carry a small rose brush trimmer that has a Duck Bill cutting blade. I slip it thru the soil under a root for a quick cut. It will cut roots the size of your thumb. Also have used one of those cheap plastic key-hole saws that holds a hack saw blade. The blade needs to be broke off since they are too long.
