Funny true story...
September 05, 2000 at 14:41:26

Last month I had an opportunity to do a few hours of detecting in Minnesota where we went for a family reunion. I was detecting at an old overgrown house site where my wife's grandma had lived many years before and I found some wheaties and some things. But on to the story... My sister-in-law and I have this on-going practical joke that we play on each other. Sometime ago my mother-in-law bought a bunch of packages of very ugly green "space alien head" cookies from a local grocery store that no one (except my kids) will eat. Knowing that my sister-in-law was disgusted by even the sight of these cookies, I hid a package in her luggage as a joke one day when she came by for a visit. So the next time she came for a visit she retaliated by hiding them somewhere where I would find them. This hiding of the alien cookies has gone back and forth a few times (each time getting a little more creative) until she got me good a few months ago by having someone I didn't know pose as a delivery person on my doorstep with a package for me. It seemed a little strange, but I signed the delivery lady's clipboard for it because it was all official looking in a standard delivery box. Well when I opened it up and alien cookies came out they all had a pretty good laugh! Well, I wasn't going to let her get away with THAT! She attended the family reunion in Minnesota with us last month and after seeing that I had found some coins, she showed an interest in trying my metal detector at the old "grandma Minnie" house site. I told her how it was common for people of days gone by to cache money in jars and cans in the ground rather than trust the banks and that there was a fair chance that her grandma or someone else had buried money somewhere around this old house site. The next day I showed her how to use my detector and she was SO excited to make a big find! I suggested that she try over by the old wash shed that was still standing and after awhile she got a big signal. I went over to help her and moved some trash, lumber, and earth and pulled an old rusty tool box out of the ground. She was pretty exited about it and I let her open her treasure while my wife (who just "happened" to be video-taping the kids playing) turned the camera on her. She was stunned for a minute as her visions of silver coins and jewelry were replaced with visions of green alien faces staring up at her! She screamed. I ran.
