Hi Randy - I just started metal detecting about five years ago. My first machine was a $200.00 Garrett. I found alot of nice things but the detector was not too good on salt water beaches and for depth. So I purchased a Fisher 1280x for water and a Minelab Sov.XS. It took me awhile to learn the Minelab. It stayed in the closet for almost a year. I hated it. Then once I made myself use it, I love it and very seldom take the other 2 out. The Minelab construction wise is not very sturdy. It won't take much rough treatment but, that's the only bad point. It has depth and sensitivity. I find alot of gold rings with it. Just be patient, learn the machine and develop a love for metal detecting. I think it will be worth the effort. This is my story and I'm sticking to it. HH - Jody
