Your model detector "may not be all that good" on picking up small gold. I suggest you take the earring and detector back to the dealer and re-try some others. For example, the Tesoro brand detectors are noted for there ability to pick up small gold jewelry as are some "gold specific" detectors made by various manufacturers........which he may not carry if you're not in gold country.
