Thank you, everyone for your help! I have learned a lot from all your comments - most of all that I expected a little too much from a beat up detector at a rental shop. I am from Guelph, Ontario, Canada, by the way. The model I have is the Whites Coinmaster Classic 3. It has aswitch for normal or black sand- I have it on norm. It also has a switch for GEB/DISC and then GEB. I have been experimenting on the GEB section and i seem to get more of a normal sounding response and it has started to pick up my earring. I have it on "ring range" and the sensitivity i tried was next to the "p". The frequency adjuster is pretty well pegged. I have NO idea what all these acronyms mean, but i am trying everything - ha ha! The question is now, whether it will pick up in a few inches of snow. I will try again tomorrow.
