Dave, I live a little north of Birmingham. I don't know if there are any dealers in your area, but the two main dealers(one White's the other Garrett) in Birmingham were both very helpful when I first started out. I know most state parks or historical areas in my part of the state have signs as you enter that tell you whether or not detectors are allowed. If I can be of any help let me know.
