Radio Shack "Affordable Metal Detector"
June 16, 2001 at 20:44:36

I lost my wedding band on my lawn the other day. I went to Radio Shack and bought their 49.95 "Affordable Metal Detector". After a little while I found the ring. What is puzzling to me is that I had to set the Discrimination dial to "Min" to locate the ring. (I ran a test on another gold ring to calibrate)The detector has volume,Tune and Discrimination dials, as well as a automatic tune button to bring the needle back to zero. The detector is a very basic ferous/non-ferous model. I am very new to detecting and I am puzzled by the fact that I had to set the Discrimination dial to Min to find the 14k gold wedding band. I realize that my detector is an El Cheapo model, but why wouldn't it find a 14k gold ring (in the grass!)when the Discrimination dial is set to mid-range or above to look for non-ferous metal? If the ring was buried beneath the soil I don't think the detector would find it at any setting. Thank you in advance, Andy
