Andy,
Gold will read differnt as to the size and K of the gold. My gold band read foil on my Minelab Explorer and the Sovereign which is probably were you had the Radio Shack detector set at on Minn. Most of the gold rings I find are around the nickle reading and the real large gold ring will read up to mid range like pulltabs will.
