Byron, your experience is far from unique; MOST persons who buy from the big mail order firms DO NOT buy from them a second time. That is the reason why the mail order firms do such extensive advertising: they need to cater to the newcombers to the hobby, who have yet to be soured by bad experiences. Now, I would like to comment on your statement "... yes, I would have paid more..." buying froma local dealer. Frankly, that is not necessarily so, ESPECIALLY when you consider the issue of VALUE rather than price. Look at it this way: would you be willing to pay $25.00 to $50.00 more from a dealer, to get training, advice, and service that is worth $200.00 to $300.00 more? I regularly encounter people who lament they "saved" 5% by buying from a mail order firm, but since they can't figure out how to operate their detectors, they have lost 100% of their money, and, more importantly, 100% of their potential finds.
