Unpopular opinion of the new Cortes....
October 06, 2001 at 08:20:02

First let me preface this whole critique by saying that the Cortes is an EXCELLENT Tesoro offering. However, when you take into consideration cost value vs. performance, I feel there are better choices in that price range. For instance, you could own a Sovereign with a nice Sunray DTI III meter for the same money and that will quite simply destroy the Cortes for raw depth, especially in bad ground, while still offering an excellent ID. Or you could by an Explorer S, brand new, which I feel is the best technology available or a good used Explorer XS with some Sunray goodies. If two filter machines are your bag and you want ID, both the IDX Pro and QXT do the job admirably at much less money than what Tesoro wants for the Cortes. I would argue the White's machines hunt not only quieter but are more ergonomically pleasing as well. Their balanced rod and strapped arm cup set-ups are a smart design that works. I did not find the incredible depth claims some of the others did. I did find the meter to be very accurate in ID but not in depth. I also found this machine does NOT benefit well from the 12X10 coil. If I were to use that coil on any Tesoro again, it would have to be on the manually GB Eldorado or Bandido II for best results. That brings up a HUGE gripe I have with the GB on the Cortes only manually adjustable in all-metal. WHY??? What a waste on a machine that costs this much with so many other nice features! Again, this is an excellent Tesoro but one might be better served, performance and value wise, with the Eldorado at $375.00 or one of the aforementioned 2 filters. For me, it is the IDX Pro (which I will have modified by Mr. Bill shortly and report on accordingly). Just my 2 zincs worth.....HH George Fatizzi
