Paul,
Check at the local library for info on old parks, picnic grounds, Horse racing tracks, fairgrounds ect.
It is likely that these type of sites have been hunted in the past so the real deal is to look at any sites you find and target the fringe areas and out-of-the-way spots. Some of these may be overgrown now or even woods that weren't there when the sites were being used. That is what you are looking for, the areas that others didn't bother to hunt.
For example, today I hunted at a campground that was the site of a horse track years ago. Instead of hitting the campsites I hunted the woods on either side of the road leading into the campground and was rewarded with 3 Barber dimes and a 1910 lincoln cent.
Every dectorist in the area knows that this is an old site and it has been hunted heavily, but by concentrating on the fringes I was well rewarded. HH Tom
