Why are archeologist like this?

I was listening to public radio this morning and they had on a archeologist who worked digging up old outhouses. The guy was coming down hard on people who dig these up but are not archeologist. He wanted them protected so that only archeologist could disturb them. Most of these outhouse sites are on private property.

What wrong with me digging up old bottles from an old outhouse? It's not like I robbed a grave. The same type people want to oulaw metal detecting. I don't understand.
