Hello Gavin, I actually spoke to one of these guys who drives one of these machines on a little beach here in West Oz, South of Perth. Rockingham Beach in fact. He told me that he would occasionally find something but most of the time he would dump his rubbish load in a pile and thats the last he saw of it. I actually threw a couple of Aust 1 dollar coins in the machines path and it did shift the coins but not pick them up. might work different on gold chains. I dare say that these machines are actually dfferent to each other in the way they pick up and "sift" and at what depth they go to.

Try it yourself next time with a couple of coins. Just in case though, be prepared to lose them. Let us know how you go.
