My detector is a liar!
October 22, 2001 at 14:46:02

For nine months I have been fumbling around with a Radio Shack metal detector... which is fine, I knew what I was buying. I'm a relic hunter with my first love being bottles. I bought the detector simply to help me find the trash piles around old home sites and the detector does a great job... of finding trash. Recently while digging for a bottle I had probed into I also dug an Indian head penny and an old dime. I wondered how much old change I had missed and how much more I could find. NADA! It seems that my detector has habit of lying. A wonderful clause that's mentioned in it directions.... heavily oxidized Iron is shown in the silver range. There is no way to discriminate against Iron that shows to be silver. I have read books and spent hours on the Internet trying to find out how to actually know that the "silver" I am about to dig is actually silver and all I can come up with is that I need to invest in a real metal detector.

Here is my question... Before I purchase a Whites XLT, will I have the same problem with Iron showing up in the silver range? esp. square nails. or should I just feel better for having to hike with less gear?

Thanks for any help you can give, Jason R.
