They are deeper than the XLT and are hotter on nickels and that area. Some earlier models had problems with being stable, understand that has been corrected. Anyone owning an XLT or DFX with bottlecap reject should dig little or no iron as the sound is quite distinctive in answer to the other fellows post. Certainly a good detector and as you already own an XLT you will have no problem getting used to. DFX has a swing speed adjustment that you can alter to your preference, hence no longer need to swing medium, fast for deepies...
