I have limited detector experience, and I realize that my Stinger isn't close to the best gold machines on the market today--most of the gold I find I get the old fashioned way. Nevertheless, I truly enjoy reading the knowledgeable, friendly experiences of those of you who have devoted a lot of time to nugget hunting with metal detectors.

I have some questions and thoughts: Wouldn't the type of soil or sand covering a nugget affect the detectors ability to "see" it at various depths? (It sounds like the hot red clay doesn't allow a very deep reading.) Is it somehow possible that the three-quarter ounce nugget at twenty inches was covered with drift sand that wasn't hot? (How far can an eight inch coil "see" in material that isn't hot?) Maybe Richard can supply some missing information to help clarify how he found his nugget at that depth.

Sincerely,

Lanny in AB
