When some of the original sourdoughs of Nome lost their rich claims to some human snakes, one of their company went to the beach and began to pan beach sand. Everyone that passed by thought he was crazy--everyone KNEW you couldn't get gold from beach sand (this is HISTORY not fiction). But he did anyway--and so did thousands and thousands more. Tons of gold came from those beaches. I've panned it myself and was struck by and still can't believe how much gold was in my first pan (even if it was flour gold)! If Richard is finding nuggets in plain sand at the depth he claims--is he crazy?
Viper,
Sometimes, just because something seems too fantastic to be true, it doesn't mean at all that it is. If you haven't been to the claim in question and don't know what the soil conditions are like, how can you possibly make the call as to what the detector will do in those circumstances? I remember asking Bud Granley in Helena Montana (this guy is a bona-fide professional with a five pound nugget, and other beauties, on display in a local bank, as well as countless other nuggets, from several different countries, on display in his store) the question as to how deep a gold detector would hunt. He said in hot soil maybe two to four inches on most targets (this was before the SD 2100) maybe deeper on a really big target. In plain sand, he said it would see a target a long ways down. Maybe Richard has a point. I hope he (Richard) keeps posting, because he seems motivated by the desire to contructively help others and by his own desire to continue to learn more from others as well.
I will state again what I stated in another post: in life it is OK to disagree with others. Some people just have to accept the fact that it is OK to disagree and to have a contrasting opinion--and then move on.
