Lanny,

I seriously doubt a SD 2100 could hit a 3/4 oz nugget in clean builders sand at 20 inches. I own and use an SD 2100, I swing it hundreds of hours each year. It will not find a match head size nugget at three feet, and in most cases, it can't find one at 6", it's not a small gold machine! But I like small gold too, I like all gold, it pays the bills.

My room mate (and mining partner), cleans my clock with a JW Fisher PI in soil conditions too extreme for the 2100. The PI will hit smaller nuggets, at greater depth than the 2100 using the 8" coil, both in the American West, Alaska, and Western Australia.

As far as Bud's nuggets are concerned, I've heard so many conflicting stories about who actually found them that I could care less, I've seen them, and they are nice pieces. You can't believe everything you read in the ads, enough said.

In my humble opinion the 11 best detectors for electronic prospecting are: Tesoro Diablos and Lobos, White's GM's, Fisher Gold Bugs, and the SD 2100. We have quite a collection of detectors between us, and each has its strong and weak points. For the buck, the new Lobo LST is pretty hard to beat. Face it guy, this is just a fringe hobby, if it were mainstream, we would be talking about Sony, Mitsubishi, or Toshiba metal detectors. They would cost less and offer more.

Did you ever visit Wilma Beaumont when she was the national distributor for Minelab? The national distribution center was her converted single car garage! She is a great lady, and always went the extra mile in her dealings with me, that was not a cheap shot against Wilma, just reality. Minelab is a fringe manufacturer, in a fringe hobby market.

I bought an SD 2100 because I knew what it could do, based on five weeks of hands on experience. It was never meant for the casual weekend detectorist, the price and learning curve is too high. Would I recommend one? Certainly, but with an honest explanation of its capabilities.

Minelab has a track record of bringing new and inovative products to the US market place, only to be replaced by another newer and improved model that is replaced by a newer improved model, etc. Consider the FT 16000, XT 17000, and XT 18000, or the SD 2000, 2100, 2200d (d??? I don't remember a, b, and c) among others. The original Gold Bug and Lobo is still going strong! It's not because they cost less, they just perform better.

I assume you prospect, Lanny, do you honestly believe Minelab's claim that the XT 2100 will find match head size nuggets at three feet or more? Does anyone????????

(Minelab's SD 2100 fact sheet, their words, not mine (currently on the web)

The SD 2100 uses a newly developed technology known as Multi Period Sensing, (MPS). MPS enable the SD 2100 to distinguish between "ground response" and a "target response." What remains is a clear distinct target signal from only metal objects like gold nuggets. The removal of the "ground response" enables the SD 2100 to penetrate up to 4 times deeper than any other detector on the market.

In highly mineralized ground where other detectors have difficulty even operating, the SD 2100 will find match-head size nuggets at depths of 3 feet or more! With the SD 2100, you'll be able to go back and successfully hunt at all of your favorite"hot spots"!

Our vacation is almost over, it's time to head back to Nevada, and dig some more gold, that's what we do. Fortunately, we use a Case backhoe to dig and spread material, it's a lot easier on the back. I wish the 2100 could find 3/4 oz nuggets at 20", it would be like going the the money machine on our claims, unfortunately, it doesn't. If I told a tale like that among local miners who actually use 2100's every day, they would laugh us back to North Carolina, or shoot me if they bought one based on mt information. The SD 2100 does a good job, but it has its weaknesses, that's why it's already obsolete. If you don't believe me, ask Minelab, but keep in mind they told you the SD 2100 would find match head size nuggets at three feet or more.

If you ever get down our way (Lovelock, NV), you are welcome to put it to the test against different machines, a real test, not on the web, but in the ground, where most detectors work best. We check our e-mail weekly during the season, my offer is on the level, Richard's exagerations are not. You be the judge!
