Jerry and all, Yes Giardia is a really bad little dude. There is one upside, rapid weight loss with no effort on your part other than staying real close to the toilet :-). There are many commercialy available filters that seem to do the job quite well and stand up to back packing and canoe tripping. Make sure you get one that is certified to remove giardia. When you get water always get it well away from shore and in running water when available.
