Carter, the size dredge is not the only consideration here. If that was the only consideration, everybody would have a 10" dredge... Every situation is different, and where a small backpack dredge is completely inadequate at one thing, it will excell at others. Other factors to consider are the amount of water (is it enough to support a larger dredge), the depth to bedrock (will I need air), remoteness of the location and time involved, etc. I have a 2 1/2" and a 4" dredge, and yes if all other things are equal, I'd never use the 2 1/2" again, but things are never equal and the 2 1/2" is simply better suited to most situations (for me). I use the 2 1/2" in extreme shallow water, remote locations, and for testing. When you have your dredge, you will soon notice that there are situations where you need a different piece of equipment. No one piece of equipment will work well in all siuations. I believe I have most situations covered with two dredges, but if I had to choose, I'd stay with the 2 1/2". Get the backpack, find some good spots to dredge, cut your teeth (so to speak), and then get a bigger dredge( maybe). Just my opinion.
