Steve, I'm not quite sure which coil he was using, but it I had to guess I would say the 11" mono. One of the best features of the SD2200d is the automatic ground balancing, and if you've ever talked to anyone, or seen videos on detecting in Australia, you know that the ground conditions over there are harsh. So having a machine that goes as deep as the sd2200d does, and having auto ground balance really helps in changing ground soil. As far as the tune button goes, if you've ever used an sd2100 you know that if there is certain weather conditions it effects your machine and once the tune button is depressed then the machine automatically tunes itself to the conditions, thus you have a steady "hum" instead of changes in threshold that could cause you to miss weak sounding object. All in all, I think it's not one thing that helped him, but all of the features working together to give you the optimum depth and sensitivity. The discriminator is a great tool to have on this machine because if you have any areas that you've wanted to hunt but they are just too trashy and you don't want to spend all day digging the trash, it has different signals for trash and gold. It's not that it ignores the trash and only gives you gold signals, but there is a deffinate difference in signal between trash and gold. Hope that this answers your question! It really is a great machine...
