Two Questions about MineLab Detectors

Thanks for stopping by to read my post. I have two questions that you might be able to help me with. First, is it ok to use a ML with it's coil under water? I am thinking about buying a unit, maybe an 18000 or the newer sd models. Will the coil be damaged if I hunt in shallow creeks? Second question, is there much difference between the 18000 and the SD models to warrant the huge price difference? What, in your opinoiin, is the best model, especially for a newbie? All your inputs are appreciated.
