hi sunpilot---sorry i didn't answer this part of your question, but had to leave for a dr. app. the coils on the 1800, and the sd are not waterproof.--however i have used them in the water by doing the following---if water gets under the skid plate, and sloshes back and forth as you swing the detector, it will cause the deyector to give false signals if the water is mineralized. the solution to this is to put silicone around the edges of the skid plate. preventing water from getting in.---you should also silicone around the top of the coil where the cord comes out. this has worked for me. however it would void your warrantee if the coil shorted and did some damage to the detector. this would be your shot to call. i can assure you that minelab--nor any other detector manufacturer tries to put anything over on the public as has been sugested on occation. as far as the people who suggest these things just take it from where it comes--hoss
