They are a unique species of crossbreeding that appeared during a very confusing time during North America's evolutionary cycle. I believe they evolved around the time of the platypus. However, the platypus has seemed to survive much better than our Jackalopes.
As Greg indicates, they are a cross between antelope and Jackrabbit. It is true that they are most likely to be encountered in our drinking establishments. It can be quite a shock to the un-initiated after inbibing a few pints.
I shudder to think of the original reproductive activities that resulted in this unique (however quite stupid) creature. The implications are mind boggling when attempting to determine if it was the jackrabbit or the antelope that was the first sire of the breed ;-)
