I'm really puzzled. Were you trying to balance each channel individually? If so, why? If the ground is super hot, I could understand using channel 1, but not 2.

I've never ran into very hot ground at Quartzite, but I suppose there could be some. It does get hotter over by the Trigos. Could you have been picking up microwave interference with the 11" mono?

Did you go to fixed and then track, or was the problem only when in tracking mode? If you had been using the 2200 for quite a while, it sometimes tracks better if you turn the machine off and then back on.

Just some things to think about.
