What is this stuff?

Hi everybody,
A few years ago me and Tom McCorkle went prospecting in a canyon and found some really strange ground. It was a patch about 30 ft long and 10 ft high of a grey/white, soft clay.
The stuff stank and there appeared to be sulfer leaching out of it.We looked closer and noticed there were crystals embedded in it. They weren't quartz, none that Ive ever seen anyway, and we guessed they were calcite. We noticed also that there was much metallic granuals laced through the goo.
We did not have a detector at that time so we did not check it over but we did take about 40 lbs of the stuff home. I let it sit in a bucket for a week to break down the clay and panned it out. I have never seen so much pyrite!
Anyway we did not find any gold in it but lately I've been wondering just what we found there. Should we go back and buzz it over or do any of you guys out there know what this goo is .
Thanks,
Tincan Pat
