Prospecting on a Military Reservation?

April 12, 1999 at 20:46:06

Does anyone know the general laws about prospecting on a military reservation?

Is it treated like BLM federal land?

Have any of you tried to request permission from the post commander as a metal detectionist recommended?

Where would one go to read the laws concerning prospecting on a military reservation?

Is it obvious that I am somewhat new to prospecting?

Well, since finding gold in an older gold location on BLM land, I remember an abandon mine on an active military reservation in Arizona that probably only two other people know about. It is in a very remote part of the post, very hard to get too. We think it is an old Spanish mine because there are no metal pins in the entrance timbers, only wooden pegs.

We didn't go in the mine because that was, and is, one of my cardinal rules about mines. Never enter unless with the owner, a geologist, or a seasoned miner.

It is not a large dig, but it sure looks like the same material as the stuff I found gold near. I haven't been up there in about 10 years, but my interest is wet again. I sure would like to pan the wash below it.

Gold fever!
