When you say "check it out" what method are you going to use to check it out? Are you going to only use a pan and shovel? Are you going to sluice it? Metal detect, or put a dredge and dredge for the gold?
I would check with others who have worked the creek, and ask them where (not there "special spot), but at what level they find most the gold. If it is only found on bedrock and none in the overburden, you will have to try and figure how deep you might have to go.
Look at the creek, gold is LAZY and always takes the shortest route (shortest and deepest). If you are a fisherman, look at with the eye of where you might think would be a good spot for fish to hide (fish like to hide in deep spots and wait for stuff to be washed to them).
Try and envision what it looks like when the creek FLOODS, pushing large bolders and rocks down it, the other inflowing creek probibly causes a slow down in the flow of water where they meet.
If you are panning only, look for clumps of tightly packed grassy materal that has washed down the creek. Put them in your pan and tear and break it up, you will sometimes find nice gold in the sand packed roots.
