An Easter Surprise long text

April 15, 1999 at 10:27:23

Hi there, It was Easter weekend and I met up with my partner down at our favorite spot down on the river. We had high banked there earlier but never made it to bed rock. ( We did hit water though at about 8 feet. ) We planned a three day trip and were ready to go.

When I got down to the river my partner was no where to be found. So I decided to sample a few areas to see where we wanted to work. I knew that bedrock was only 5 feet down a little up stream from our last hole. The whole bank area had been town apart by others. The nice thing was that everone was finding nice color. I sniped around a few bigger rocks looking for an area that was not coverd by tailings. After a few pans I found a likley spot.

The bank had no top layer of rocks on it but sand. I set my equipment and started to go. Something in the back of my mind said, "Here!" My friend arrived shortly and asked where we were digging. I pointed to a spot about five feet from me and said, "I'll meet you in the middle and then we'll move up the bank."

As we started to dig I noticed that about 6 inches down was a boulder. I dug and finally got it out. Hmmm there's some nice peices here. I kept digging. I couldn't belive it. I was boulder bound!! There was nothing but sand and boulders. No middle size guys. But under each and every one there was GOLD. After several hours of this I was only four feet down and my partner was just getting to bed rock! No it was his turn to get boulder bound. I started to think ( a rare thing for me to do.)

Let me see, His bedrock was flat. Boulders and no really smaller rock. Good gold. A good red layer of dirt. Then all of a sudden, PING. My shovel hit another rock. This one was very flat on top. I thought "No, it can't be. I'm still at least 12-14 inches from bedrock." Yep, it was bedrock. We had hit a nice one foot drop in the bedrock that was perpindicular to the stream. I shouted to my partner "start diggin!"

When we got it all opened up. We had some nice bedrock with a 1 foot drop straight down. Not only that we had a half crack about 4 inches away from the face. We finshed for the day and called it a night.

When we came back in the am, I sniped the hell out of that crack. There were two nice nuggets just sitting there for me two pick up. All told, about half an once for our work. It was a nice Easter.
