I'm a dealer for Koss so you can disregard this entire message.
I have heard both the Supersound and the Koss. The Supersound runs around $60. The Koss runs $29.95.
There are some folks that use the Supersound that really like it. It is used extensively in Australia because they don't have the Koss readily available.
Hoss Blackman uses the Supersound and really likes it. My hunting partner had one and prefers the Koss over it. He sold his Supersound. He said he likes to be able to adjust the tone on the Koss and he says the Koss is louder.
I have to agree the Koss is a louder amplifier. On the other side of it, the Supersound is larger but it is also more substantial in the way it is made. The Koss was designed as a Stereo headphone amplifier, it just happens to work well for metal detecting. I talked to Koss yesterday and learned that because of the response they are getting from the Metal Detecting industry they are going to be designing some products that are Metal Detecting specific products.
Steve Charely and Chris Hake told me that they have tried every amplifier out there and the Koss is the only one that doesn't cause a hiss in the back ground. Now I don't know if that includes the Supersound or not.
I have never heard Hoss complain about a hiss, and the only reason my partner opted for the Koss over the Supersound was the level of amplification.
So, from what I know about the two units, I really don't think you can go wrong with either.
The Supersound is larger but more substantially built but it costs more, it has only one control, and they have a model built specifically for the SD machine. The Koss is lighter, smaller, a little more fragile, less expensive, but it is louder and has tone controls and right left balance.
And Marsh remember something, people usually become dealers for products that they use and believe in. AND they usually do so after they have already tried other products and made comparisons.
I could have carried the Supersound, but it would have meant I would have to import it. I use the Koss and I like it. But I know people who use the Supersound and like it as well.
Just because you're a dealer it doesn't mean you stop being objective.
Whether you invest in a Supersound or a Koss is actually of no consequence in the big wide world of consequences. You see I wouldn't lie to make a sale no matter the profit incentive, so I sure wouldn't lie in order to make a sale of a Koss amplifier that I make a whole $7 profit on.
And my experience with most dealers in the Metal Detecting industry is the same. Most are honest business men who will give you their honest opinion. This is too tight knit a community, for a dealer to engage in unscrupulous behavior for too long without the word getting out that he's a whanker.
So, I've seen this type of post before, "no dealers please," that's fine! But remember, when you don't want to hear from dealers you are denying yourself information from probably some of the best informed people out there.
Certainly you should be capable of distinguishing between hype and honesty, regardless of the status of the respondent.
You be careful out there,
Doc
