Jim The indians probably simply picked it out of streams or other by gleaning. This is supported by the fact that the great majority of huacas (gold figures made by indians) comes from southern CR where there are good deposits of nugget gold. The indians here did not think too much of gold. It was OK but they put much more store in Jadite, serpentine or even quartz. They even knew how to alloy gold. The only metals they had were gold and copper. They frequently alloyed these metals to about 4-8 kt and made their "lost wax" figures. This low-gold stuff is called "tumbaga".
