Digger Bob gave an excellent video presentation

Today I received a video from Digger that documented his trip and the testing of the Coiltek loops as well as the Minelab loops.
I thought having makeup people constantly dabbing your face while you are detecting was a little much, but hey whatever it takes to make you look good for the camera.
Seriously, I must say, I have seen supposedly professionally produced videos that were no where near as good as this one.
And the place Digger and Chico Jim were hunting is really God's country; it is just beautiful.
I also must admit, that in the video the nuggets that were scanned using the 11 inch were louder than with the 5 X 10 COILTEK. In one instance the target was there, but I'm not sure you would have caught it if you were walking and swinging. It was pretty faint. Digger uses an external speaker so it was easy to hear the targets on the video, and hear the difference.
I couldn't tell a difference between the target sounds on the 11 inch compared to the 14 inch.
And there was quite a bit of ambient electrical interference as demonstrated by Digger when he held the coil off the ground to demonstrate what they have to contend with.
I guess what Digger was looking for was that target that the 14 inch could sense but not the 11 inch, but he just didn't get a target like that. Everything he could hear with the 14 inch he could hear with the 11 inch as well.
His video concluded that maybe the 14 inch provides a 10% depth improvement, but I think he felt uncomfortable making that statement because my feeling was he was giving the 14 inch the benefit of the doubt.
I really think you probably need 5 trips out digging a variety of targets before you have a real sense of what a coil can do.
Digger did an excellent job on the video and of testing and comparing the coils.
There may be a greater difference when used with a SD2200d. That is yet to be seen.
I think one of the advantages of the 14 inch, even if it gets only a 10% increase in depth is it gives you a 27% greater coverage with each swing at only 4 oz. heavier than the 11 inch.
The other thing is, I would have like to have seen some air tests on the nuggets that were dug.
While there are critics of air testing, I still think it is a good way to compare an 11 inch apple to a 14 inch apple.
The fact is, there isn't a manufacturer out there that can give you a hard and fast answer as to how deep any coil will go. All the information is gleaned from stories from the field.
There are too many variables. Is the ground mineralized, how is the nugget positioned in the ground, flat, or on end? The size abd shape of the nugget. No one really knows how to figure all of these variables into the depth equation.
We've all heard about nuggets that were dug deep with all kinds of coils.
I don't think there has been a totally objective test yet devised to determine coil depth abilities. It is more of a general sense of using coils over a period of time that tells you which one goes deeper, or, which is better under certain circumstances.
If someone thinks I was questioning Digger's integrity in doing the tests, nothing could be further from the truth. Digger has no hidden agenda other than to test the coils and see what he could determine. My greatest joy came from trying to give Digger a hard time.
It takes a lot of time to mess around swapping coils and video taping the results. Time that could have been spent hunting. But Digger, true to his word, produced a video to show me the testing and how he did it. Thanks Digger I appreciate it, and I really enjoyed it! Funny but every time you started digging a target and it started getting louder I could feel my heart start beating faster, it was almost like I was doing it myself. And that one time when you finally isolated the target and it was a nail I said a cuss word out loud, and my wife said, "What's wrong?" I said, "Ah Digger had this great target and it turned out to be a rotten nail." My wife retorted, "Well honey just try to remember it's only a movie!"
You all be careful out there!
