Phil, it seems to me that other brands like Garrett, Whites and Tesoro already offer a fair choice of coil sizes and types. If not and if there is a particular size/type coil you want, get on the back of the manufacturer to have special coils made. If enough people want the same special coil made, somebody will make it even if the manufacturer cant be bothered.
Minelab only offered 3 standard coils for the SD's, none of which were waterproof. The 11"DD was for a long time the most commonly used coil, with the 8" and 18" mono's being used occassionally for specific purposes, so in effect the worlds most expensive metal detector only had one general purpose, non waterproof coil.
The Coiltek guys could see the glaring holes in Minelabs pathetic "range" (sic) of coils so they took the opportunity and ran with it, and boy oh boy, have they hit the nail square on the head !. If other detector manufacturers are not listening to the coil demands of their customers, they'd better be prepared to get "coilteked" by an aftermarket coil speciallist.
Coils are the single most important factor in varying the performance of any detector, yet the worlds most expensive detector only effectively had one general purpose coil.
Good hunting,
Chris Hake.
