Re: I believe it could be your hearing April 25, 2000 at 19:59:14 In Reply to: Kim My old Friend someone finally tells the truth! posted by Tom_OR on April 25, 2000 at 09:43:20 Hello Tom, I didn't get no response back from your email. For all you that don't know I emailed Tom and sent an attachment of the small copper nugget. Without a doubt Minelabs will find little pieces of gold, copper, etc. Although VLF's with a high freq. like the goldbug 2's will out shoot the Minelab SD's on crumbs(little bitty nuggets). Other detectors like the Tesoro's, Goldmasters, etc. will find smaller nuggets that the SD's will not find. Whether the SD's are an all-around better detector, I will let you make the choice. Minelab SD's with small coils such as the Minelab 8 inch mono or Coilteks 10x5 elliptical will find nugget down to 2 grains in size on or within several inches of the surface. I'm not so certain I want to find anything smaller than that since I have to use eyeglasses to see them. I know for a fact that there are allot more smaller nuggets than larger, but finding anything smaller that a few grains is not for me. I have collected several hundred nuggets that are small enough to blow away with a wisk stroke of breath by use of an SD. One major problem that older detectorist could have is loss of hearing due to older age. I know for a fact that several guys that I hunt with have limited hearing, whether it's in one ear or both. An advantage for them is to use an amplifier or EQ to gain the sensitivity they lost by age. Maybe this might be something that Tom might want to look into since it does make some difference. Long story short, I'm always willing to show what I know and put my experience on the line, but no ones ever wants to see it. I believe this is due to the fact that they know they might be wrong and would hate to see the day someone else was right. As far as Tom's SD2200d not finding small targets, well I think it's his machine, hearing, or lack of experience adjusting the machine to its maximum potential. Minelab SD's(2100 & 2200d's) equiped with small searchcoils will find small nuggets(down to 1.5-2 grains) on or within a few inches depending on the mineralization. I have personally done it hundreds of times, and can only prove it to Tom in person. Whenever Tom makes it back down here, lets see if he looks me up. I can bet I won't get a call, I wonder why. Like my Father always told me, if someone else can't do it, then I cant either????? I hope I didn't hurt anyones feeling, but the facts are the facts. Simply carrying two detectors in the field to do the same job is unknown. I can see if you are using a large coil such as a 18 or 24 inch and need something to pinpoint, but the change of a coil can do the same and cheeper. Just some food for thought. Take Care, Robert
