Some Civil War shells aren't as bad as the Boogey men make them out to be. Depends on the type of fusing. I've drilled a bunch of them. You have to be more careful with the percussion ones. Wood drives,paper and the Bormanns allow water into the fuses. Thats why there is alot of shells with very rough areas around the fuse. The black powder is very corrosive to iron. It also helps to know where to drill due to the thinnest part of the shell. And never use a electrical drill. Manual hand drill and a new bit is a must in a bucket of water. James
