wooden knife handles

need help dating a knife hoping to establish date of site, it's a relatively common butcher knife or skinning knife with wood handle. the wood is essentially intact, only some of the soft grain is decayed, the rivets are steel as opposed to brass. the wood looks like it was preserved with oil and is extremely hard like hickory or even maple. how long could these handles survive if the bugs and water didnt get to them. the blade by the way is about 95% all there, just rusted and flaking severely. it appears to be high carbon steel and still has some spring to it. any info would help thanks.
