Chewed-up bullets

I found a .58 minie the other day that was so unbelievably dented all over that it had that "chewed" look. I know that it's not true that these were "pain" bullets chewed up by wounded, but does anyone know what would disfigure a bullet that much? This one is so completely chewed up all around that it would be nearly unrecognizeable as a bullet if you didn't know what one looked like. I've read that maybe animals chewed on them, but that seems far fetched to me. I found it in the yard of a pre-CW house in D.C. Thanks. - John
