Some are human teeth marks and some are animal. Soldiers most definiately chewed on bullets. The next time you go thru Vicksburg stop by The Corner Drugstore Museum. It is probably the largest Civil War Medicine Museum in the South. Joe Jerache who is one of the leading authorities (50 years of Civil War knowledge), will tell you that soldiers chewing on bullets was very common in the field during surgery.
