In the 1860's people didn't know the dangers of chewing on lead...I'm also sure that the last thing on their mind was ..."Will I choke on this while the Doc hacks a limb off". Also...it wasn't uncommon for people to have bad teeth...I don't believe that dental hygiene was as important then as it is now.
I don't mean this as a flame to you...but...we, as people of modern times, forget how our advancements in technology and standards of living compare to that of our forefathers from the 1860's.
If you ever get a chance to research the human side of the war...do it. I have spent a lot of time looking through photos and reading personal letters written by the soldiers of the Civil War...it's a side that many people overlook. As a rule most people look at the major battles and the names of the Generals who fought and won or lost; not the unknown man who gave his life to only be remembered by his family.
I think this is enough said.
