Several years ago I got permission to escavate one of the largest hospital sites in Central Miss. We found a bunch of chewed on bullets. Recently, I showed these bullets to a dentist and he showed me which bullets were animal teeth marks and which bullets have human teeth marks. Many of the bullets with human teeth marks were chewed at the very end of the base or just above the nose. I don't think any animal could have picked these up with their paws and just chewed the nose or bottom end. The bullets with animal teeth marks had random tiny bites. Both museums in Vicksburg confirmed these findings. And a denist. Many of the soldiers at this hospital site fought from Miss. all the way to Virginia so it's all over not just localized. My conclusion is animals and humans chewed on bullets. The best way for a digger to find out which party bit on his bullets is take them to a dentist. Dan
