Kim, They were fastened on with wire which was soldered onto the back. The best book scource is The U>S> Army in the West 1870-1880 Uniforms, Weapons, and Equipment by Douglas McChristion. Doug is the historian at Custer Battlefield. The book was published by U. of Okla. press. Should be available thru your library . IKE
