Cleaning Iron Relics ????????????????

What is best or proper procedure for cleaning heavily rusted iron relics ? (ie. ax, ladel handle, lock) I've read about using WD-40 and also about clear artists spray. I've read about using a wire wheel, steel wool, or dremel tool. I need some help, the items mentioned above are from the cabin site of my g-g-g grandparents, so I don't want to ruin them.
