Many people use electrolysis for removing the rust. That is fine if you have the equipment. If not, here is the method that I use and it seems to work real good. First clean the object of all loose dirt. Follow that with a good wire brushing to remove all the loose rust. It is important to remove all the loose flakey bits of rust in order for the object to be properly treated. I then immerse, or paint, the object with a rust mort which kills and hardens the rust. It must be used with caution as it is an acid. When dry the rust takes on an almost black like color which makes the object very pleasing to the eye.
