Hi Ed,
Depending on the number of troops camped in the area, there may have been huts on both sides of the ridge. Here in Northern Virginia,I have seen winter huts on both sides of the hill,on top of the hill and all the way to the stream bank.If it was a winter camp, you may be able to see depressions in the ground where huts were built. These may follow a certain pattern and be laid out to create company streets.Generally these huts were about 2 to 4 feet deep and could be of any size from 6 feet on a side or larger. They were often square, but could be rectangular. If there weren't that many troops, the huts would likely have been built on the south side of the hill to take advantage of the sun on winter days.
If it was a summer camp, then the troops might have slept in tents which would have left no signs, except the items they threw away such as bullets or buttons, ect.
I am fairly new at hunting camps also,so I am still learning about them. Most of the camps in my area have been heavily hunted, but I still manage
