Hello Steve, Yes permission to detect can be obtained in South Carolina. I know of a metal detecting club where you get a "permit" just for joining. The national forrests in my neck of the woods offer some old sites. Also check out Game Management Areas. I've talked to several game wardens, and they informed me that detecting is allowed anytime witout any permits. I wouldn't advise in going during deer season though. There is alot of GMA areas in the national forrest here in South Carolina. You can also check with some hunting clubs that lease big areas of land. They usually will give you permission to hunt as long as you're not detecting when hunting season is open. Hope you find many slave tags.....Clyde in Fairfield Co.
