Soldiers distances travelled question

In doing research I often encounter references like we marched 5 miles beyond a certain city then camped. Or we marched 12 miles today and camped along the road. My question is how accurate were they? Did they measure from the center of town, or the perimeter? How did they know distances travelled? Finally, has anyone encountered this during research, followed it through, and hunted the site? If you found the site, how close was it to the recorded account. Any help would be appreciated by this quasi-rookie. Thanks Rick.
